Since everybody forgets that Cardigans are corgis too (will the debate over "REAL CORGI" never end?) I "fixed" the corgi and made him a sable Pembroke. Of course, it's still not going to be good enough for some people, since I despise the "as short as possible!!" bob tail. Ah well. => I might give him a nice blaze just for fun, but I haven't decided if I want to repaint much of him yet! With his relative. Butt-shots for comparison. (They do exist, people!)

"longer than it should be"?? A dogs tail should be as long as it is naturally. It's illegal to do their tails, here anyway.

I remember that debate. It really wasn't a big one. I only remember b/c corgis are my mom's favorite.
I wish they would make docking illegal in the US too. Also ear clipping and other elective cosmetic changes to animals.

Haha, oh no, there wasn't a debate here!! But ever since the beginning of the breed there's been this big debate over which corgi is the "real" corgi. Hence why they created the two, with their own individual sets of standards! But it doesn't matter, because there can still be this rivalry between the two, LOL... I can't tell you how many pem breeders talk nasty about cardigans, like they're the "lesser corgi" (and yes I've heard that phrase! ) It makes me sad, and it also made me sad to see people on the boards going "That's not a corgi, look at the tail!!" The pem is the more popular, 'cause of their connection with the Queen, but they're both still corgis! *cries for the poor forgotten cardigan!* I love both breeds, so I wanted one of each. Yup, all I did was reshape the tail! I think I'm going to do some repainting on both of them, though... I'm sooo tempted to repaint the pem to look like Ein from Cowboy Bebop, ahehehe! I wish tail docking/ear cropping was made illegal in the US too. =/ They used to breed pems specifically to try and get the tails really short, but once tail docking was "discovered" they really stopped being selective about that. Now that it's illegal in a few countries it's become popular to breed selectively for short tails again... not in the US of course, since docking is still very common practice. =< Anyway, I don't mean to start up a debate about corgis and tail docking XD I just want to promote the Cardigan Welsh Corgi LOVE!! <3

Ahwwww I love Ein!!!! That's such a cute dog...! By the way; some dogs are born with ''abnormal'' tales. While the rottweiler, boxer, jackrussel terrier and doberman are supposed to have long tails (they have been seen with clipped tails, and sometimes clipped ears!), the french bulldog is born with a small curly tail, or a little stump like my Branco. These tails haven't been ''cut'', it's just how they're born. I'm not sure how the Corgi's are born... but I believe the shorttailed-ones (I always mistake which is the cardigan and which is the pembroke, sorry!) are born that way?

I always thought Pembroke corgis were born with short (or no tails) as well, but I just checked out a website on them and it said that the tails are docked as short as possible and that some are born that way though... the maximum length allowed for show is 2 inches.

As I said above: They used to breed pems specifically to try and get the tails really short, but once tail docking was "discovered" they really stopped being selective about that. Now that it's illegal in a few countries it's become popular to breed selectively for short tails again... not in the US of course, since docking is still very common practice. =< Some can be born with short tails, and some not. It is not a trait that is commonly bred for in the US, and therefore is not consistant. Not to mention it would take a LONG time for it to become consistant, anyway, so really they've just done damage to the breed by slacking on it... But most pem tails in the US are docked, not "born that way."

Beanie, I love this topic and I love your customs! I was a corgi mommy to both breeds, the pem and the cardi! I can tell you that the pems were bred from the spitz group (so they are a bit more hyper and have foxier, pointer heads - average weight is around 25-28 lbs) whereas the cardis were bred from the hound group (so they are wider, heavier dogs with larger heads - average weight is 35-38 lbs ). The cardis are my absolute favorites and are the much rarer breed in the US. I have a pem named Zoey and I had a cardi named Ryoko. Unfortunately, she developed IVDD, ruptured a disc which severed her spinal cord, and had to be put down a week later as she was doing very poorly health wise (we just put her to sleep yesterday morning). I highly recommend the breed! Ryoko was a blue merle and my favorite coloring for the cardis next to brindle. Here's a pic of her after we brought her home from the emergency vet last week: And here's a pic of the two girls together: I love Corgis with tails!

Awwww...what sweethearts!! I'm so sorry that you lost Ryoko. It's such a sad thing to lose our furry friends. I bet Zoey misses her too. You're in my thoughts.

So pretty! I'm so sorry you just lost your baby. Blue merle is my favorite coloring as well. I had a blue merle sheltie I had to have put down a couple of years ago and I still miss him so much. I know how hard that decision is.
My husband and I have been talking about getting a third dog (yes we're insane) and he mentioned getting another sheltie while I talked about getting a corgi. You guys are making me want a corgi even more!

Oh, Jeni! *hugs* I'm so sorry. Thanks for coming to share your photos with us, they are both beautiful. I have a friend who breeds Pems, and he once told me their tails can be soooo long sometimes... since they are descended from spitz, the tail curls up over the back... and can actually overbalance the dog! It's a funny mental image and a terribly sad one at the same time. Poor puppies!
redb! We have shelties also, yay! My Auggie's a sable - his breeder only does sables and sometimes tris. I want a blue merle at some point, I think they really are gorgeous! The fur patterns can be SO stunning!
