Dah! I was hoping there was a silver lining...I have to call, since I was "supposed" to serve this week. The paperwork got lost, though...that's my excuse!
I have two kids, 6 and 10, I'm home with them during the day, but I also have classes at night and I have to work! Sure, it's a graduate assistantship position, so I'm really out of the house for 6 hours or so a week, but still! The last time I got one of these stupid things, I could check financial hardship/work won't cover, and that was it. Now....
Good God, I don't want to go! I don't want the hassle of trying to get downtown, park, have to pay for everything (since the compensation checks don't come until AFTER you need the money...) and have to deal with the headaches of everything associated with the court system! Beyond all the hassles of rearranging my life...I doubt they'll pay for a tutor if I do have to miss classes!
I'll have to call, though, and see what they say...

The bad thing about this is there are some people out there that would like to serve on jury duty. But they never get called. They should put out a call and say, "Volunteers needed." Then if they still need people, start recruiting more. I bet there would be lotsa retired people that would be glad to do it.
I say this because my dad would like to be called for jury duty, but he never has been. When I was called, he said, "Oh, I wish it was me." My mom was called once, but not him. He'd love it.
I just wish they could ask for a volunteer list of those that would be willing. Might not be the proper way of doing things, but it would certainly help out those that would have a very hard time of doing it.

I always thought it strange that jury members, responsible for deciding the fate of someone, don't even want to be there. Some may even rush to a decision just to get home quicker.

Yeah...definitely a good reason to ask for volunteers first. I'm afraid I don't want to be on a jury either. The last time I was called, it was a case very similar to one that my cousin had been involved in, and it made me biased. So I was excused. But if I had been chosen, I would've given it my 100% attention. I'm sure everyone here would. I was watching a show the other day on TRU TV, because ya know I love it. And they were talking about a jury that didn't even take 2 hours to decide a murder case...and they could hear them in there joking and laughing about stuff that didn't even have to do with the case. Laughing!! When they were supposed to be trying a man for murder. A man who they said was not guilty...but a year later when he moved they found the pictures under a carpet in his old house of him torturing and murdering the woman. But because of "double jeopardy" they couldn't try him again. Even though he confessed to it that time. He tortured her until she died!!! Ugh!!!

My MIL loves being called for jury duty, and the longer she serves the better. She likes to get away from work. I think the volunteering would be a great idea.

I went a few weeks ago. I did not bring my daughter. My mom took off work to watch her. I was told that I could not be excused. So I remained there until 4pm, excused after I told the judge that I could not serve for more than the 1 day because I don't have child care. The judge called the attorneys back to the bench. And then they started the selection process. I was so relieved when they said the remainder of people could be excused without even calling me.
One issue I have with this system, is calling the jurors by name instead of by the numbers given. I was really creeped out by the individual accused of possession of a fire arm (second offense). He would turn around and look at you when you spoke. I didn't like that at all. I think I watch too many movies, but it made me uncomfortable.

They didn't to that for us, and I just had to go to jury duty Aug. 18...my one week vacation from school for the summer! I had to go in Monday, and sat there for most of the day. I got called in to sit for a murder trial. There were several people there with small kids, and about the same amount of people with either no kids or adult children. I was kinda hoping they would excuse the ones with little kids, but no luck. I finally got kicked out because there is NO way I can look at crime scene photos without being sick (murder during the summer, body not found right away...). I think you all get the picture. I was not the only one that did NOT want to be there, either. I agree with the volunteer aspect. My husband would LOVE to go, since he gets paid from his work. I really didn't, so I ended up paying more for the day, since I had to get my niece in to watch the kids. I spent about $15 more than they paid me for going. I am not happy with PAYING to go to jury duty! There are plenty of people that would love to go, for the experience or to get out of work, that they should be able to pull maybe a few people randomly, but get the rest from a "willing" pool. I can honestly tell you, if I had been picked, I was all set to go into deliberations and just tell them I would vote with the majority, just to get the heck out of there! That does nothing to support our law system, and I wish they would get it through their heads that forcing people isn't the way. I got a sappy letter from my judge about how my showing up proved our judicial system worked, and people my complain, but it was worth it in the end. I take offense at that...I did not WILLINGLY show up...I was blackmailed. I was told if I didn't show up, I would get a contempt charge filed against me, which could result in a warrant. How fun would that be, getting pulled over in a couple years for a burnt out tail light, only to be arrested because I didn't go to jury duty?? I call that dishonest, to be frank. Whatever...it's over, for at least 12 months. See if I register to vote again!

Whatever...it's over, for at least 12 months. See if I register to vote again! It really ticked me off when the judge would ask what your last name was. Me (and others when speaking to him) would give our number and then he'd ask for your name as well. I didn't like that at all! I've heard that people who registered to vote get called for jury duty. I always wonder how it could be my turn again, so soon. I was excused in the past, but I've received notices almost every year. This year I was summoned to serve in January 2008 and then again on August 21st. I was really upset about the timing, too. My sister was on maternity leave the entire summer and could have watched my daughter. She had just returned to work that week...and school started for my daughter on August 25. I was so worried I would miss her first day of kindergarten.

I don't think they want to realize what a hustle and great expense it is to find a childcare for kids in a spare of a moment! Before I went on that day, I had a horrible headache for 3 days and as soon as they excused me, it went away right away!
