They totally got my number and keep wanting me every year! I'm the primary caregiver for my kids (a fancy title for me as a stay-at-home-mom for now). In my state (CA) apparently if your kid is above 6 years old, you can't be any longer excused and have to serve your Jury duty. Has anyone had the same experience and what happened? I was denied the excuse this year, since my girl is 6 1/2 years old. I explained myself (in requesting an excuse) that I don't have any other means of care for my 2 kids other than myself after I pick them up from school at 2pm. But that didn't thaw their hearts I'm planning on bringing my children to my Jury duty ;D

I got a jury-duty notice when Bella was a year old, and I just took her with me to the interview. They pulled me aside, right away, and asked if I had anyone else available to watch her. I told them I didn't, and at the time, I didn't even have my own car, so that was another issue. They excused me almost instantly. Maybe if you do that, they'd excuse you? Bringing them along? Hope you get it worked out!!

I'm going to bring my daughter along with me. My request to have my jury service postponed was granted. They would not excuse me and were very cold. I was supposed to report in January and did not. They do not care if you are a stay home mom. I was told to arrange for someone to care for my daughter. Here is an article about a woman that was going through the same thing. My mom sent me an article, not sure if it's the same, about this same woman after I told her what I was going through. www.examiner.com/a-1247152~Breast_feeding_mom_faces_fine_for_refusing_jury_duty.html

I just read the article and can't believe it It's just unbelievable how people that hold a bit of power in their hands, will abuse it! I think if a person is taking care of someone between the hours you are requested to be present for Jury duty, should be excused from it without any trouble given. What are they expecting us to do? Get a child care -- where? at who's expense? I stay at home for these reasons, to provide great care for my kids in the least expensive way. I'm definitely bringing my kids with me. Not because to I want to but because I have no other choice. We'll see what happens...

I'm sorry you guys are having so much trouble!
That article is just crazy.
When I was younger, my mom had to do jury duty for a case, that lasted two weeks, and I remember my Grandma practically living at our house to watch us! How is that fair? Sometimes the deliberation lasts for HOURS!
I don't think as a primary care-giver you should be forced to do it.
Keep us updated on what happens!

Good luck. I'll have my fingers crossed. Thanks so much! Apparently it worked! ;D Were you scheduled to be summoned as well? Hope it works out for you too. Once I showed up with my kids, they immediately sent me to a "Hall of Records" to get an excuse or postponement after having an interview with a clerk. On my form I had checked a "financial hardship" in case they were going to make me send my kids to a summer camp (checked prices before hand and almost had a heart attack ) or find after-school program in a nick of time, we are a one income family for the moment. I also had my son's IEP from school that indicated there are special needs. Once she glanced at IEP, she excused me right away! I was so nervous and anxious with a horrible migraine. All of my thoughts were about what will I do with my kids in case they make me serve. Well, it all worked out for the best.

I received an extension, back then. (Not sure of the length.) My husband received a notice, recently, but when he called the night before his day to serve, he was told he did not have to report. Go figure, the person who could actually serve jury duty doesn't have to report. But the SAHM is hassled and threatened!
I'm glad things worked out for you.

It's funny, my husband was called a month later after my initial summon. He went there but didn't get picked up as they needed someone for 4 weeks and my husband's employer would only compensate for 2 weeks. So he was let go.
I do see and understand when you can be somehow compensated for the time and salary lost but when you don't even work and have to arranged for an emergency child care, it's a great expense! So SAHM are really caught in between.
There is a single working mom that we know of with two kids out of school right now. She was summoned and told that they didn't care, if a child is over 5, you must serve. So she is on a jury duty right now and her kids are home alone (10 and 8 years old)! I would never leave mine alone and would find some kind of care for them and suffer a great financial loss, if there wasn't any other way.
I do hope that it works out for you too in the best interest.
