Two and a half months ago, I went back to work full-time. I had been in graduate school until December 2006, but then I took a leave of absence to care for my son with seizures and cerebral palsy. I ended up leaving the PhD program and just took my Master's degree. By May 2008, we were so financially tight I had to get a job. I got a job as a chemist at a pharmaceutical company. I was hired as a temp-to-hire. Here's the thing: the temp company I signed with is becoming a problem. I initially signed a contract that I would be hired full-time permanently in 30 to 90 days and that I would be hired as a Chemist II (a chemist II pays more than a chemist I). I recently asked for a copy of that contract. I received the copy via email today, but there are no signatures on it. The terms on the contract they sent me are not the same as the one I signed. It says I will be hired permanently after four months. There is no mention of being hired as a chemist II. This could be as much as a $19,000 pay cut. I don't know what to do. I would like to ask them for the signed copy and ask about the terms changing, but I am afraid of causing any problems or seeming hostile. The job market is so bad in Cleveland, and I feel fortunate to have found a job, but we really need me to get the salary of a chemist II. As it is, the additional babysitting (for my older two) and nurse costs (for my youngest) are so much higher that being a temp and getting temp. pay does not help us out much. We still can't pay all of our bills each month. Any advice. Do I just wait until I am hired and get the salary offer? Do I call the temp company? They were supposed to send me a copy of the contract right after I signed it in May, but they never did. So I have no hard proof.
