Welcome back! I am so sorry for your loss. He does look like a gentle giant. Was he mixed with a German Shepherd? Here are some hugs for you and your family. Glad to have you back.

Awww!! I'm soooo sorry to hear this!!! I felt just as you when Rascal was lost. I didn't want to eat, sleep or anything. Why was he sick? Did it happen while you were away? I know Rascal won't eat and gets the poops whenever we are away. They get home-sick for you I guess to the point that they get sick. Awww Sweetie! I feel so bad for you! From the pix, (which I love!) it appears he was a very happy doggy! How old was he? Rascal will be 8 on Sept. 7th. I commend you for putting her down though. I know how hard that had to be! There was a dog boarded at the vet where Rascal was that was really old. It was a black poodle and it couldn't hear, see, control its' bodily functions and could not stand because of a protruding hip bone. I was horrified by the site of this poor dog, so I asked about her. The assistant there said that the owners "didn't have the heart to put her to sleep." WTH?!!! The owners of her had said when they dropped her off that they hoped the Lord would take her by the time they got back. If I had seen these people, I think they would have had to hold me back!!! This poor dog, when she would go to stand, she'd fall forward and bang her head on the cage. Poor thing. I hope God does take her soon because the people who have her, don't deserve her. In my opinion, it's all about the quality of life. If they can get better and ARE getting better, that's different. Okay - I'm done. Lots of hugs from our family to yours!! Thanks for your sweet comments on my thread too. I had been wondering where you'd been! Smoochies!

I'm so very sorry to hear about Calvin. What a beautiful dog he was. I can tell just by looking at him that he was very gentle. I LOVE the picture of him at the door with your son. You can tell he loved your family very much. And it's obvious he was very happy with you.
It's so hard to lose a furry loved one. I cried for days when my dog died. She was 15 and had just gone downhill at the last. I still remember one particular food dish that my roomate made for me after I came back from saying my good-byes, and I was so nauseous, that I couldn't eat it. And I still hate that food, because it reminds me of that time. And that was 13 years ago.
Best to you and your family. And again I'm so sorry.
And Judy...that's horrible what those people put that dog through. Unconscienable. I think I spelled that right.

Calvin was almost 11 years old,he was throwing up and had the runs and couldn't hold down water...we thought he just was upset we were gone at first but in the following days it got worse not better(even after a trip to the vets, pills and special food that would be gentle on his tummy)so my hubby took him back(I just couldn't) and we decided before he left to do what was best for him if need be(it wasn't easy but it is selfish not to I think.) Thank you for your words Kathryn and I agree with you-he did have a good life with us he was totally a part of our family and always will be... Little Pet Crazy we are not sure what he was mixed with(we got him fron the SPCA) but we were thinking maybe a german sheppard or maybe a rotty(because of his facial colouring)but his heart and soul was all lab Thanks for the hugs.. Mrs."e" thanks for the return welcome.I hope to be chatting more again in the future and can't wait to see the customs you have cooked up while I have been gone.. Judy-I TOTALLY agree with you about the little dog you saw while Rascal was at the vets.....It isn't easy to say goodbye to a loved one ever(person or pet)but you have to think of them and what life is like for them before thinking of your own need to be with them.Poor little soul....I hope she is already at peace...I think Rascals story affected me so much because I know what it feels like to lose apart of your family after just going through it myself and I was SO happy that your story(and rascal's) has a happy ending. Thanks for the support and hugs sweetie Mrsvalden-Thanks for your sweet words about Calvin....I could go on forever about how much he means to us and how special he is....Sounds like you know exactly what I mean. What was your furbabie's name? It's such a special and strong bond you develope....I felt awful but I was more upset about losing Calvin than I have been about people that have passed on. Thank you so much everyone for your kind thoughts and condolences.......it means alot to me.Bless you all. *HUGS* ~Laura P.S. The pic of Calvin and my son at the door has been a favourite of mine since I took it.......They used to wait like that at the same time just about every night for my hubby to come home

Laura, that picture of you and Calvin is absolutely precious. I'd frame that if I were you. I have a framed picture of my long lost friend on our dining room table still. Her name was Shotsie. I wasn't crazy about the name, but she was 6 months old when we got her, and that was her name so we just left it. Didn't want to confuse her. ;o) Someone told me once that Shotsie is term of endearment for someone in German, kind of like sweetheart or honey. So I like that. Here's the picture I have framed. She was about a year old here. She knew she couldn't come into the living room, she had to stay in the kitchen/dining room area that had linoleum. But she would hang her paws over the step into the living room and be close to us. Sorry to hijack your thread about Calvin. It's just nice to share pleasant memories of our pets. I know what you mean about taking it harder than some people's passing. This dog was a part of your everyday life for so long...no one would judge you for feeling that way. Certainly not me. Hugs to you.

LPSPrincess, I'm so sorry about Calvin. You're pictures of him are adorable! He was a gorgeous dog! He looks so loved. It is so hard to lose a pet and it really takes unconditional love to know when to let them go.
When my mom had to put down her dog, Crissy , she said that this narrative helped her to feel a little better:
Just this side of heaven is a place called Rainbow Bridge. When an animal dies that has been especially close to someone here, that pet goes to Rainbow Bridge. There are meadows and hills for all of our special friends so they can run and play together. There is plenty of food, water and sunshine, and our friends are warm and comfortable.
All the animals who had been ill and old are restored to health and vigor. Those who were hurt or maimed are made whole and strong again, just as we remember them in our dreams of days and times gone by. The animals are happy and content, except for one small thing; they each miss someone very special to them, who had to be left behind. They all run and play together, but the day comes when one suddenly stops and looks into the distance. His bright eyes are intent. His eager body quivers. Suddenly he begins to run from the group, flying over the green grass, his legs carrying him faster and faster.
You have been spotted, and when you and your special friend finally meet, you cling together in joyous reunion, never to be parted again. The happy kisses rain upon your face; your hands again caress the beloved head, and you look once more into the trusting eyes of your pet, so long gone from your life but never absent from your heart.
Then you cross Rainbow Bridge together....

Mrsvalden, Shotsie's picture is adorable!! She looks like such a sweetheart!! I think its so wonderful that you keep a framed picture of her and LPSPrincess I think the memorial garden for calvin is such a beautiful tribute.

LPSprincess I'm so sorry about Calvin. My heart goes out to you. I have a black lab cross that totally has my heart. A few yrs ago we had a pure bred black lab named Ebony. She lived till she was 14 and then became sick with the same symtoms as Calvin so we put her down. It broke our hearts but we knew it was best for her. Labs are great dogs. Im sending you hugs and thoughts cuz you are right that our pets are our family. I love that poem Rainbow Bridge. We printed it out on Rainbow Paper and Framed it with a picture of our Ebony right after she passed away. Do you plan on getting another lab or dog? It definately doesn't take the place of your beloved pet but it does help a little bit. We now have 4 dogs
