Every morning I have been jogging around the block in preparation for track next year. I would have joined this year, but I didn't think I was good enough. I was wondering if any of you had good tips or exercises I can do to build op my leg strength so I can run better, and be able to run for longer. I do have arm and ankle weights, but I don't want to strain myself, so I haven't been using them yet. I think I'll start next week. I have also been doing a lower calorie diet, so I can get in shape too. Any tips will be greatly appreciated!!!

I have hear of people putting on some of the smaller wrist and ankle weights. Or even a weight jacket. It will be hard at first because of the extra weight but it will help to build more muscle. Also when you run without them you will feel as light as a feather.

Also when you run without them you will feel as light as a feather. I have the 2 Ilb. wrist weights and the 1 Ilb. ankle weights. I know what you mean by felling light as a feather! I wore them around the house for a while and after a took them off, I felt like I had lost 20 pounds! That little weight makes so much of a difference.

I used to do squats, but I hate them. I will occasionally do them though. I like lunges, but I forgot all about them! I think I'll start doing those. I like doing them with weights to get that lil' kick. Thanks! I actually had a new accomplishment this morning, I ran the lap a minute faster then I ever have! ;D

Congratulations on your accomplishments Kathryn! You're doing great!!
I run every morning. I usually get up and eat a balanced breakfast. I usually have a 1/2 cup of cereal mixed w/ yogurt, a piece of fruit and a glass of Acai Juice. I let my body digest for about 1 1/2-2 hrs and then I get ready to go for a run. Before I run, I make sure to stretch my legs out very well to prevent tendon tears and knee and hamstring injuries. After I stretch I do a 2.5 mile run and then cool down at slow walk for a 1/2 mile. During the run I do slight interval training-speeding up and slowing down at points during the run. I also run on the front base of my foot to work my calves (I definitely do not recommend this for the beginner though, b/c I can't even do the full 2.5 miles in this running position and I've been running for years). Also, to maximize cardio, I run with my arms bent at my elbow at a 90 degree angle ( This helps to keep your lungs open to receive enough air, if your arms are held too close to your chest this decreases your airflow and stamina.) Afterwards I always make sure to rehydrate with water to replenish the nutrients I lost. I also find that I run longer if I bring my ipod, I pay attention to the music rather than the distance I'm running.
I hope I helped! If you have any more questions feel free to ask!! :0)

Also- I need to start streching. Thanks for reminding me! My knee has been hurting, and I'm pretty sure it's from jogging. And I have wanted to use my ipod on a jog, you can but I don't have a wrist band. I tried it once without and I dropped it. Thanks so much for your advice!
