I know there's a few very crafty people on here, anyone have experience with casting molds? I was thinking it might be fun to make "copies" of some G1 stuff and repaint them, or if I ever make a really cool custom one make copies of it, or something... the G1 stuff is scarce so I wouldn't want to ruin any good pieces by trying to customize them...

I think a silicone mould would be a good way to go. I've used Smooth-On brand products before, and silicone is fairly unreactive to other things. but without knowing the exact chemicals LPS are made from its possible it could have effects on the paint or plastic. I have had some leech colour out of some polymer clay, but if you used a sealer it would protect it. I haven't had much experience casting plastic. I knoe Smooth-On make a few kinds of plastic casting resins, but so do other companies. I'd really love to play around with more of this kind of thing but there is only one dealer in Australia and it's 2-3 times the price here. Lol, I should go and visit America and just buy lots of silicone to play with Were you thinking of casting them as single pieces, or taking them apart and making moulds of all the pieces that make them up. Because the first option would be much much easier than the second. If you've got specific questions just ask. I've only made a few moulds but I've read and watched lots and lots of tutorials (and it's part of the course I'm studying).

Hobby Lobby has mold casting epoxy by the plaster and resins. Is that a store? Never heard of it... Ashes, I was thinking of casting them in halfs I guess and then gluing the halves together, or something. Saw it on a tutorial somewhere to make rubber molds but I don't want rubber, I want something plastic-y, resin I guess?

Well If you want to create them in pieces like the originals, that's tricky because their part lines aren't in straight lines. To cast them like the originals, you would have to disassemble them and make moulds of the individual pieces. It may work for some very simple parts like food bowls. Next time I bake some clay I'll try making a mould of a food bowl. I definately would not recommend making a mould out of resin. Resin is usually used to cast with, not make moulds with. The resin is not flexible so you cannot have any undercuts in your mould, and you rick locking the original into the mould - it also may bond to the original. Silicone could make some good one piece moulds of some of the smaller flat bottomed baby animals.

I think rubber or silicon molds are the way to go for what you want to do. That means the mold itself should be made out of rubber or silicon not what material the item you make will be. What you pour into the rubber or silicon mold can be whatever you want your pets to be made out of.

I made a couple of food bowl moulds out of sculpey mould maker - which isn't all that great to make moulds that aren't almost flat with so when I put clay in it it's probably going to need more work, but I'll test it out.

OK, hehe, I bought some supplies. Poly-gel 40 brushable silicone to make molds, and 2 quarts of some generic resin I found on ebay that was cheap. Mold stuff's expensive, cost me around $50 and this was the cheapest stuff I could find =/ Hopefully I can make some money back hehe. Also bought some fairy wing making supplies hehe. When the stuff gets here I will let you all know how it goes. This will be fun!
