Hello, I've noticed all this discussion about cleaning up old LPS and I need some tips. I have a paw prints kitty and dog with ink stains, I have tried soaking in bleech water which took a tiny bit off. You guys have mentioned using alcohol to get pen marks off the tags, but what alcohol do you use and do you use a cloth to wipe it off? Can someone explain a technique please.. I would very much appreciate it.

hahah. you're so cute! i clean my items with 409 occasionally because they have dirt. sometimes they have a lot of dirt, so i let the 409 deep cleanser soak for a little bid. sometimes pen marks might rub off, sometimes they don't. For my travelers tags, honestly, i didn't have any rubbing alcohol on hand when misty suggested it to me, but i did have nail polish remover and thought this would work as good; and it did! =] i just used a cotton ball, maybe you can use a q-tip to be more precise. of course, i would be careful with any product you use to make sure it won't mess up your items and be careful not to rub too vigorously. i seriously thought the nail polish remover would fade the tag, but it worked out fine. =]

Yes, what flipdat said, nail polish remover works, but be careful ou don't rub off the regular paint with it by accident.

I've been experimenting here and there, I'm really annoyed at the marker initials on the bottom of some pieces and I WILL find a solution ::mad scientist laugh:: muahahaa
I use rubbing alcohol with just a washcloth, if the paint/ink is stubborn I use the washcloth fairly wet and it evaporates pretty quick. just be careful taking writing off some of the stickers, especially any that aren't shiny... the rubbing alcohol took some of the color out of a non-shiny sticker after i had rubbed it too long (i refused to accept the ink wouldn't come out, lol)
I haven't tried nail polish remover but wikipedia says "Acetone can also dissolve many plastics..." hmm... that might actually be useful for ink on the bottom of things if there was some controlled way to just remove the particles of plastic the ink is attached to and not damage the rest of it...
i might have to play with solvents when i have some more time... i'll see what i can remember from chem lab, lol.
kind of related, i also have a technique for fixing warped plastic (from my breyer horse days)... i will have to check and make sure it works with lps plastic though.

A quick note, rubbing alcohol took the color off of the white clubhouse kitty... it had a pinkish matte, powdery looking paint on its points and face and the alcohol took it all off... I guess beware of cleaning any pet that has that matte powdery finish
