Well, I survived. It was hard. Really hard. But I survived. Most of it went pretty well. It lasted about 40 minutes. I did pretty well on my katas and basics. My roundhouse kicks are still lacking, but they know that, and they know I'm working on them. It's just those darn hip flexors of mine that fight me.
But then at the end came sparring. And I hate that. And I suck at it. I did ok with it in class last night. But tonight, not so well. I had to spar a black belt from our other dojo where my brother-in-law attends classes. And this guy is really, really tall, and he's so hard to spar. I think I hate him. So I got really frustrated, because I couldn't find a hole at all. Then I got tired and frustrated. I sparred 2 other guys too.
All I can say is that it's over and I survived. Thank goodness. Thanks for thh prayers, Kathryn. They are much appreciated. And thanks for checking in on me, little sis. I'm ok. Relieved for sure.

Once, when I was first beginning Karate, my sensei had me spar a 7th degree blackbelt. It was so intimidating and I ended up being picked up, flung over his head, and he set me down behind him. I just remember being so stunned and so helpless at the same time. As I got better, I still felt very incapable when it came to sparring, I felt as if I was just punching and kicking with no strategy attached....but in time I began to develop a rhythm and concentrate on my fighting patterns....even though I got better, sparring still remained my least favorite of all the Karate activities.

There is a definite advantage to sparring as many different people of varying sizes as possible during class. We used to do a line drill where we sparred the person facing us for a few minutes then the line shifted so we had a new person facing us until we had faced everyone in the other line. I have to admit after sparring someone a foot taller than me sparring someone my height became a ton easier.

Thanks for sharing your experiences, starchaser. They always tell me to "use your combinations." We are taught different combinations at our various degrees (like mine last night were front kick/roundhouse kick/reverse punch and roundhouse kick/reverse punch/roundhouse kick.) So when we spar they want us to use those combinations. But it feels so much different to try to do them when someone is in front of you trying to block or hit you. I totally forget what they are. I'll do a couple punches in a row, but that's it. And they want me to do more stuff in a row. Really hurt 'em. In time, I guess. I just get frustrated too easily. That's something I definitely need to work on.

I sparred a fellow student first (a brown belt) and he was pretty nice to me, allowing me to hit him more than the others. And he was a little taller than me, but heavier. Then was the 6'5" guy. Hate him. Then Mr. S., our black belt, and he's about my height, but he always gets low down when he spars. And he was purposely doing some things to test me. Sensei Cutie was there, but not Sensei Hottie. And Sensei C. told me that Sensei H. told him to be rough on me and really make me work. Well, thanks a lot, dude!! That exercise sounds interesting. I think I've seen them do something similar with our kids.

I can't imagine doing the things you do! Kudos. Thanks!! I forget sometimes that the stuff I'm doing is not easy and some of it is really hard. I shouldn't be so hard on myself. Thanks for the reminder.

Here's a picture from my last karate test: And then this was last night when I was awarded my 2nd degree green belt (5th kyu.) Bowing to the black belts (blonde one is Sensei Hottie): Bowing to Sensei Cutie:
